Stuttgart Airport - All Information on Stuttgart Airport (STR)

Stuttgart Airport serves as the gateway for 10.9 million passengers per year with more than 100 destinations being offered. Every day some 400 take-offs and landings take place from this moderately sized aviation hub. There are four passenger terminals, three of which are departures and arrivals areas. Terminal 2 only offers departure services. The runway is 3,345 meters long and 45 meters wide and there are two parallel taxiways.

The city of Stuttgart is located in Germany’s federal state of Baden Württemberg, the smallest of all the federal states, but one of the richest and certainly one of the sunniest. The airport serves a large residential area, not just the city of Stuttgart and its outlying suburbs but also cities like Ludwigsburg, Ulm and Heidelberg.

The domestic and international airlines that operate routes out of Stuttgart are Aegean, Aer Lingus, Air France, Air Berlin, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Delta, Finnair, Germanwings, Continental, KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar, SAS Scandinavian Airlines and Swiss Air among others. Domestic destinations include Berlin, Hanover and Hamburg, while international destinations include London, Budapest and Vienna.

Within the terminal buildings there are a number of shops catering for Duty Free and ordinary shopping trips, offering anything from travel related print matter like magazines, guides and books to accessories like designer sun glasses and jewelry as well as fashion. For a quick snack there are bakeries selling filled rolls and the local speciality Pretzels together with freshly brewed coffee and cold drinks.

In the Marketplace in Terminal 3 passengers can stock up on fresh fruit and in Terminal 2 departing passengers can buy last minute gifts at Leysieffer’s Confiserie. In fact, there are more than 20 cafes and restaurants alone in the terminal buildings, from the restaurants Red Baron in Terminal 1 to the rather splendid restaurant Top Air on level 4 in the same terminal to the more down to earth Burger King snack bar and the Hafenbar in Terminal 3.

Car hire at Stuttgart Airport can be found at Terminal 3 on Level 2. Here passengers with an advance reservation can pick up their keys and documents from the rental desks of Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt. Passengers without a pre-booked car rental contract can also make a reservation at these desks.

Public transport is available in form of the S-Bahn metro trains, which leave from Stuttgart Airport’s lower ground level every few minutes for stations in the suburbs and in Stuttgart itself. The tickets can be bought from machines on the lower ground level, where the actual train station is located. Direct metro trains link Stuttgart Airport with the main train station in the center of the city, from where long distance and regional trains leave for all major cities in Germany and for all the most important towns in the federal state of Baden Württemberg. The train ticket system can be a little confusing thanks to the huge number of discounts that are available, so it is best to enquire at the information stand in the arrivals hall, what type of ticket is the most cost effective.

The taxi rank is just outside the terminal buildings. It takes just 30 minutes by taxi to get from Stuttgart Airport to the city center. There are a number of taxi firms that are permitted to operate out of the airport, but for pre-booked travel it is best to contact the central reservation desk Taxi-Auto-Zentrale at or by phone on +49 (0) 711 553 980. All authorised vehicles are clearly marked with a TAXI sign on the car roof, their company name and details on the side of the car and an official city permit is clearly displayed in the front of the car together with a meter.

Stuttgart Airport buses leave at regular intervals for the city center from just outside the terminal buildings at the arrivals levels. Some buses will only serve Stuttgart itself, while others will travel to the charming town of Esslingen or to the university city of Tübingen, which is also a popular destination for tourists thanks to its many beautiful historic buildings.

Passengers wishing to travel throughout the remainder of their day via bus should opt for a day ticket, when they board the bus, as this is the cheapest option of travelling on multi-journeys. The end destination of the bus route is always clearly displayed at the front of the bus and drivers are generally very helpful with regard to information. The ticket can be purchased from the driver.
